Our president, in Guatemala talking about immigration:
The president’s visit put him in the awkward position of defending tough new enforcement actions and expanded barriers along the southern U.S. border while assuring Latin Americans that he remains committed to not expelling from the United States most illegal immigrants.
Yeah, it must be awkward explaining why we enforce the law against some but not all. I’d have a hard time with that one too.
Berger was openly disappointed. “The Guatemalan people would have preferred a more clear and positive response — no more deportations,” he said. But he expressed confidence that Bush could push through legislation addressing the situation. “We have never been so close to finding a solution to this problem as now,” Berger said.
Who is “we”? Do Americans get a say on Guatemalan immigration policy?
And exactly what is Guatemala doing to make their country less shitty? Because that’s the only way that they can help “find a solution” to the problem that 10% of their population now lives in America.
The president said he wanted an immigration reform plan through Congress by August. Everything conservatives need to know about this plan can be summed up in one sentence:
Bush’s August time frame pleased Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (Mass.), the main Democratic author of a bipartisan plan that the president generally favors.
