I just received an email from a law firm that begins, “As Co-Chairs of _____ Diversity Committee, we write to encourage you to learn more about _____ and our commitment to diversity.” Aside from the bad writing inherent in starting a letter with “As a ___ I ____”, I don’t think I’m the target audience of their diversity push.
It’s a fitting end to the day when I watched the Holy One lecture us all about slavery and racial sins of the past. Here I am getting a letter that might as well say “if you’re white and not gay or a woman, please ignore” at the top. From the law school admissions process all the way through to getting a job on the other side, it should be apparent to anyone in the legal field that, perhaps more than any other industry, lawyers absolutely love to wallow in their racial discrimination. Schools and firms advertise it at the top of their brochures, and the ABA wants to stop accrediting schools that don’t adequately discriminate.
I’m not going to wax about the importance of the legal profession. I’ll just say that so long as crap like this continues, there will be people like Obama lecturing us on race. Racism is racism is racism; discrimination is discrimination is discrimination. There is no reverse, and none of it should be tolerated. Not burning crosses, not screaming preachers, not “whitey goes to the back of the line” emails.
